Packet Capture Module and Related Components

Customer Provided PCAP Repository

This is where your PCAPClosed Packet Capture. A file format that contains captured network packet data, typically used for network analysis and troubleshooting. files are transferred when you issue a HarvestClosed The process of retrieving PCAP files from Packet Capture Module devices and transferring them to a customer-provided repository for analysis. command to a Packet Capture Module. See Storage Profiles for information about supported storage configurations.

Additional repository options are planned for future releases.

Unified Agent

The Riverbed Unified Agent is a prerequisite for any NPM+ Core, Packet Capture Module, UC, and other related Riverbed modules. It must be installed first, and visible in the Unified Agent Manager before you can proceed with deploying the NPM+ Core module and NPM+ Packet Capture module.

Unified Agent Manager

Note: You can navigate to the unified agent manager through the Riverbed Platform UI.

The Unified Agent Manager is hosted on your Aternity tenant. You will log in to Aternity to access the Unified Agent Manager

You deploy the Packet Capture Module using the Unified Agent Manager or other supported methods, such as external command line or your corporate software distribution manager (i.e. InTune or SCCM). You can remove the module using Unified Agent Manager or the other supported methods mentioned above. NPM+ Core Module for Windows

The NPM+ Core module is also a prerequisite to deploying the Packet Capture module. This module analyzes network traffic and provides expert analysis of key metrics, as well as the foundation for the Packet Capture Module.

NPM+ Packet Capture Module for Windows

This is the module that performs all of the operations related to packet capture. You communicate with the Packet Capture Module using the Packet Capture Module Web UI.

NPM+ Packet Capture Module Web UI

The Packet Capture Module Web UI is hosted on the Riverbed Platform. You will log in to your Riverbed Platform tenant to access the Packet Capture Module Web UI from the main menu.

Packet Capture Module SaaS Backend End Services

SaaS Back End Services provide the communications between the Web UI and deployed Packet Capture Modules. They also track the connectivity status of each device running Packet Capture Module, current status/state of Packet Capture Module operations on each device, and a historical record of harvests performed over time.

Capture Job

Capture jobsClosed Writes network packets to local disk for continuous or on-demand captures. write network packets to local disk for continuous captures or on-demand captures. The details of which packets get captured are controlled by the Capture ProfileClosed A configuration template that defines packet capture parameters. you reference when you start the capture job. You can provide a name for the capture job when you start it.

You control a capture job using action buttons in the Capture Job details display. Actions include:

  • Start a capture job.

  • Stop a Capture job.

  • Delete a Capture Job and the associated capture buffer file.

  • Rename a capture job.

Capture jobs can be stopped, and then started again using the same capture buffer
